Abstract
Titanium dioxide photocatalysts co doped with Iron ( III ) and lanthanum were pre pared by a facile sol gel method. The structure of catalysts was characterized by X ray diffraction (XRD), Raman spectroscopy, UV vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy and X ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The photocatalytic activities of the samples were evaluated by the degradation of methylene blue in aqueous solutions under visible light (λ 420 nm ) and UV light irradiation. The problem echanism of co doped particles was investigated b y analyzing the structures and photocatalytic activities of the un doped, Iron and/or lanthanum singly doped and co doped TiO2. The results of XRD, Raman and XPS indic ate that Fe3+ ions substitute d for Ti4+ in the lattice of TiO2 and lanthan um ions existed within the crystal matrix or on the surface of TiO2 as the form of La2O3 particles In addition, diffuse reflectance measurements show an extension of light absorption into the visible
region by these dopants. Compare d with Fe3+ or La3+ singly doped TiO2, the codoped TiO2 exhibits excellent visible light and UV light activity and the synergistic effect of Fe3+ and La3+ is responsible for improvement of the photocatalytic activity..
