Abstract
The self-diffraction phenomenon of a laser radiation in nematic cells only appears if high power lasers are used as they
determine a molecular reorientation of the nematic director. The action of the magnetic field on the molecular reorientation
is significant even for low field intensities (lower than the critical field for magnetic Freedericksz transition). Under the
magnetic field a decrease of the diffraction rings on the projection screen is observed. From the theoretical study of the
phenomena it results that even if the number of the diffraction rings becomes smaller when increasing the external
magnetic field, the time period needed to reach the maximum number of rings does not suffer a significant change. The
theoretical estimations were in good agreements with experimental results obtained when using a 300 μm planar nematic
cell..
